My creative process is just as much about the narrative as it is about the final piece. Every artwork carries the backstory of my life, a delicate balance of artistic creation and tending to a young family. The stresses, strains, frustrations, and fears that come with this journey naturally influence what I produce. My focus isn't particularly on creating joy; it's about provoking thought and resonating with individuals going through similar experiences. I aim to blend seriousness with the unexpected, injecting humour into situations and experiences that women commonly face through bold, often out of place, brushstrokes. This work is dedicated to feminists striving for equality, both for themselves and future generations, and to the men who stand alongside us, hopeful for a future where we all stand united.

  • Concept.

At the core of my artistic approach is a focus on gender, challenging societal norms. The work spans various sub-genres, forming a cohesive collection tied together by shared ideas. In the conceptual phase, my creative process involves a mix of research and organic exploration, leading to a series that seamlessly evolves into a meaningful expression of ideas. i might even talk to those I love, where everyday conversations and challenges reveal a new path.

  • Capture.

I often start with a specific person or subject in mind to convey my concept, photographing them to articulate the essence of my work. I lean towards authenticity, favouring pieces where people are portrayed without makeup or a curated sense, and will approach the time like an interview in an attempt to fully understand them and their [place in the narrative. The process involves capturing a suite of photographs, which may culminate in a single piece or a series, all centred around that subject. During this phase, I find that less is often more.

  • Paint.

Then comes the challenging phase. I sift through photographs to find the ones that capture the emotion I aim for in the piece. The painting process may involve free-flowing strokes, allowing the paint to guide me, or it could begin with a more structured approach like a grid, ensuring a closer likeness to the person. I initiate with the portrait of the face and then progress to more organic mark-making that complements the individual and conveys the underlying message of their story. Or, what I like to call the “vandalism” (see below).

  • Materials.

When inviting someone to invest in my work and vision, the utmost priority for me is delivering a finished product of exceptional quality and conscious craftsmanship. I exclusively use Golden paints renowned for their high pigmentation, resulting in more intense and vibrant colors. Additionally, I purposefully select panels cut from the offcuts of a local carpenter, a deliberate choice to uphold environmental consciousness and reduce my carbon footprint. Your investment supports not just my art but also a commitment to sustainable and high-caliber practices.

What’s Next?

Once the paintings have been created in my home studio in Norwich, I capture HD photographs, which are then sent to a local printing house. These professionals fine-tune the images based on the originals before creating artist-quality giclée prints. Afterward, the pieces are carefully packaged and hand-delivered to another local framing company, where we find the perfect frame for each piece and its new home.
